Born again
- Born again is a term used primarily in Evangelical Protestantism, where it is associated with salvation, conversion and spiritual rebirth. Commonly people who are born again testify of stories of re-birth or the new birth.
- The idea of born again carries with it the theological idea that a Christian is a new creation, given a fresh start by the action of God, freed from a sinful past life and able to begin a new life in relationship with the Holy Spirit. John Wesley and Christians associated with early Methodism referred to the born again experience as "the New Birth".
- There was a true story in the Bible of an old man. His name was Nicodemus. He was a leader among the many religious school of thoughts in Jerusalem. One night, he came to seek out the famous teacher, Jesus. He asked a very simple question. It wasn't that he does not understand or know what the real problems of life were. He had grown older, and acquired much learning and wisdom, but one nagging problem was this: how to be certain of the way to go to our future destiny after death. Or is there really life after death? Obviously, Jesus was noted for providing all correct answers to difficult questions of life's problem. Jesus even healed the sick, and caused the blind to see, and done many good works. Therefore, respectfully and in deference to Jesus, he said,
- "Teacher, what must I do to be saved?"
And Jesus answered and said to him,
- "Truly, truly I say to you, you must be born-again !"
It wasn't that Nicodemus didn't understand the question, but with all that knowledge and understanding he knew about life, he simply could never figure out what Jesus was talking. They were talking on different levels of talk. One was certainly relating to all realities of life at the earthly level, and another was referring to life of another kind, that is, the heavenly sphere of existence.
All through Jesus'' ministry (his walk and talk) Jesus taught about faith in God and to believe in God is to really believe in him' too. His subject was always the kingdom of God. He spoke of it(kingdom) not as an earth kingdom, but in the spiritual or eternal realm of reality.
The way was always centering on Jesus and faith in Him. The right attitude was to turn toward God as in repentance from their old ways and look to Him (Jesus) for the new. Therefore, with Nicodemus Jesus understood him, and simply answer according to his need. He must repent of his old ways and be like a new person ( just a new baby coming to a new life)by trusting in Jesus. All his learning and wisdom came that night to naught as the True Teacher of life confronted him.
Obviously, he needs to ask for further clarifications, and he said,
" Must I then return to my old Mother's womb, and be born again?"
So Jesus explain with an illustration about an earthly (wind) example to explain the spiritual reality of life on a higher platform, ie. the invisible heavenly kind.
