SAMOA'S tsunami warning system was the pride of the Pacific, intended as a template for the low-lying island nations across the region.

But after several years in development, and using a mix of the latest technology and ancient coconut wire, or word of mouth, it was beaten by the force of nature..

The epicentre was 377km from American Samoa capital Pago Pago, which was hard-hit by this week's 8.0 earthquake and tsunami.

FEARS of deadly outbreaks of disease in tsunami-battered Samoa mounted today, as frightened survivors sheltering on higher ground refused to return to their beachfront villages.

Meanwhile, teams of Australian ambulance officers and health officials have moved across the island to relieve exhausted local hospitals and clinics. Samoa pleas ..help..[[3]]..

Authorities on remote islands evacuated thousands of people from coastal areas, sounding sirens and emptying schools and offices, after the triple 7.8, 7.7 and 7.3 quakes struck in seas off Vanuatu from 9.03am (0903 AEDT). The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a tsunami warning for some 25 countries and territories stretching as far as Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia.

But the quakes generated only a small tsunami, with waves of between three and 10 centimetres recorded by tsunami gauges, and experts said serious damage was unlikely.

"A tsunami was generated but it looks like it was not damaging," Brian Yanagi of the International Tsunami Information Centre in Hawaii told AFP.

The fresh warning caused terror in Samoa, just eight days after a wall of water churned up by an 8.0-magnitude earthquake obliterated entire villages and killed 143 people plus 32 in American Samoa and nine in Tonga.

[edit] Strong quake recorded off Philippines

October 8, 2009 - 9:49AM A strong 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the Philippines early on Thursday, seismologists said, but it was at a depth of 582km and no tsunami warning was issued. The quake was in the Celebes Sea, 320km south of Zamboanga, in Mindanao, in the south of the country, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre did not issue a tsunami alert after the quake, which hit at 5.41am (0841 AEDT).
