Joo Koon MRT Station (EW29) is a Mass Rapid Transit station, built above ground level. It is part of the East West Line and also the western terminus, taking the title from Boon Lay MRT Station. Alongside Pioneer, it is part of the Boon Lay Extension and it is the most recently opened MRT station in Singapore.

The station roof is of a curved design with glass openings to allow the utilisation of natural lighting, similar to that of Pioneer. Orange is the selected colour scheme for this station.

It is also close to the Singapore Discovery Centre and various military camps.

Joo Koon Temporary Bus Terminal

In 2006, the then Transport Minister, Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, announced that a new bus interchange would be built near Joo Koon MRT Station. In 2008, her successor, Mr Raymond Lim announced that it would be an integrated transport hub to be built at the junction of Benoi Road and Joo Koon Circle. A temporary 14 bay bus terminal is currently being built at Joo Koon Circle road end and will open in 2010 after the new air-conditioned Boon Lay bus interchange is opened in December 2009. Some bus services that could be rerouted to this bus terminal are 182, 182M, 192, 193, 249, 251, 254, 255, and 257 as a tender released by LTA showed the layout to accommodate 9 services with 2 bays each. It is most likely that no boarding/alighting would be allowed. 8 of the lots are the end-on type, facing Benoi Road. The remaining 6 lots are in a straight line, sawtooth style. The tender release could mean that the construction of the transport hub could begin by early 2010. Private bus companies who ferry workers to Jurong and Tuas industrial estates can continue to use the bus stop at Jurong West Street 64 as a pick-up and drop-off point or switch to the bus stop at Benoi Road which the LTA has constructed for this purpose.

This station is currently the westernmost MRT station in Singapore.

History

This station is part of the Boon Lay extension, announced by the Land Transport Authority in December 2004 to help people working in the Jurong Industrial Area travel faster. The station opened on 28 February 2009 and replaced Boon Lay as the western terminus of the East West Line.

Future Developments

By 2015, the East West line will be extended to Tuas. A 14-km Tuas Extension, with five stations will be built.

As part of the Land Transport Review, an integrated public transport hub will be built at Joo Koon over the next ten years.
