Mythology is defined as a collection of interrelated stories of a given culture. Myths tend to describe the creation of the world and give a culture an understanding of the events of nature and the world around them. Myths are also generated to tell the story of the first people to inhabit the earth. These people are elevated to gods and goddesses, which usually associate them as having supernatural and special powers. Myths also express the values or beliefs of a culture, and every culture studied has their own myths distinctive to their group. (Actually all myths are ideas developed within the worldviews and fantasies of people like story tellers of ancient Greek e.g. Homer the blind storyteller )

People tend to accept myths into their dreamy worldviews such as someone who watch kong-fu movies or superman series tend to identify with such characters in the myths that are not true to life (or history), but real to themselves as beliefs! see Buddhist's worldviews such as interpretated and explained as "illusions"! goto see make-beliefs
myths are not reality in fact but often it's just emotions just as in movies!

****Can you tell if the Bible is a collections of myths or poetry or just smart writings of ancient people?

Answer : The abovementioned statement**** is an assumption that is FALSE!

The Bible is not a book of myths (yes there are myths in all books, including the Bible} !

The reality about the Bible is that it open up all the false things <myths> and show them as such..it's a revealing truth- just like Rosetta stone to find out about the world and the cosmos we exist in...

[edit] Mythology in all religions

Religion and mythology differ, but have overlapping aspects. Both concern assumptions concerning the supernatural or sacred, and the values and institutions associated with such understandings.

Modern myths in religions today

  • Cult : relatively small and cohesive group of people (often a new religious movement) devoted to beliefs or practices that the surrounding culture or society considers to be far outside the mainstream.
  • Mythography : the rendering of myths in the arts.
  • Ritual : formalised, predetermined set of symbolic actions generally performed in a particular environment at a regular, recurring interval.

Modern religious mythologies in particular

In the secular minds the reality of myths is undoubtedly the great barrier that prevent the sincere seekers from believing and accepting the truth found in religions. The successful movie and book entitled The Da Vinc Code showed that generally people are interested and curious enough to know the truth in religions and often the wrong sources and falsification of facts into fictions by successful authors created a unreal reality in the minds of the naive people about their ideas of religions >e.g. that Jesus married and have a living line of descendants - such claims are not based upon real historical facts from accurate and creditable historical sources but the naive public will accept in some ways of other to sideline Christianity as a historical reasonable and believable faith based upon actual historical evidences.

On the other hand many faiths and creeds have purposefully include or intentionally allow myths into their belief to reinforce their religious creed and help the weak minded to accept myths as if they were really truth as in history. e.g. Avatars created in Hinduism, and Mara in Buddhism had that intention to mythologizes certain observable truths in actual life. Others create sagas and stories especially for telling to children so that later in adults such facts are twisted and become more credible. Basically when ones seeking heart is diverted into accepting myths for believing then that barrier <gateway or portal in the minds> for accepting other form of make-believes like wayang stories and <esp> movies become easier.
