North South Line
From SgWiki
The North South Line was the first Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line in Singapore. The line is currently 44 km long with 25 stations, and is operated by SMRT Corporation. Traveling from one end of this line to the other end takes about one hour, and this line is coloured red on the rail map.
As the name implies, the line connects central Singapore to both northern and southern parts of the island. Cross-platform transfer to the East West Line is provided at Jurong East, City Hall and Raffles Place stations while transfer to the North East Line is possible via a linkway at Dhoby Ghaut station. When the Woodlands Extension was opened in 1996, the Branch MRT Line consisting of the route from Jurong East MRT Station to Choa Chu Kang MRT Station was integrated into the main line.

North South Line extension
A 1 km one station extension to the North South Line will be constructed and completed by 2014. The new station will be located near the upcoming International Cruise Terminal at Marina Bay. Minister Raymond Lim announced on 12 February 2009 that the completion date for the extension will be brought forward by a year to 2014.
Jurong East Modification Project
The Jurong East Modification Project (JEMP) consists of the construction of a new platform and the addition of a fourth track to Jurong East Station by 2012. The North South Line currently utilises one track at Jurong East for layover hence a second track will increase the frequency of the North South Line. Once completed, it is expected to reduce waiting time for commuters from 4.5 minutes to 2.5 minutes. On 12 February 2009, Minister Raymond Lim announced that the JEMP will be completed by 2011, one year ahead of schedule.
Possible future stations
At least 2 more stations may be added to the line in the future since alphanumeric codes NS6 & NS12 have been reserved for future use.
- 1 new station between Yew Tee MRT Station & Kranji MRT Station
- 1 new station between Sembawang MRT Station & Yishun MRT Station
