The Prime Minister of Singapore is the head of government of the Republic of Singapore (and prior to 9 August 1965, the State of Singapore). As outlined in the recent constitutional amendment in 1991, the prime minister is appointed by the president from sitting members of Parliament, who, in the opinion of the president, is most likely to command the confidence of a majority of MPs [1].
Lee Kuan Yew was prime minister from 1959 to 1990 and retired on 26 November 1990. Lee was succeeded by Goh Chok Tong and retained the title of Senior Minister in the Prime Minister's Office.
Goh retired on 12 August 2004 and was succeeded by Lee Hsien Loong. Goh was appointed the senior minister, and the elder Lee, the Minister Mentor.
