Tanah Merah MRT Station (EW4) is an above-ground Mass Rapid Transit station located in the heart of Tanah Merah, Singapore.

The station is part of the East West Line and is between Simei and Bedok and is an interchange for trains going to Changi Airport and Expo. Trains heading to these two stations utilise the middle platform.

The station's design is white-washed walls and a dome-shaped ceiling, with a glass roof running along the middle of the station. It was originally not going to be open with the rest of the East West Line in 1990 as there were only private houses surrounding it, but increasing pressure from Members of Parliament and the public forced SMRT to open this station. This case mirrors the controversy on Buangkok station about more than a decade later.

The station is the only MRT interchange station to have only one alphanumeric symbol (as opposed to other interchange stations, which have at least two). The station is also the only interchange station not to be part of two or more lines (due to its being an interchange between the main East West Line and the Changi Airport Extension of the line).

Incidents

2010 Accidents

5,000 passengers were affected when an eastbound train service was disrupted on March 20 2010.

A man in his 20s was said that he had jumped onto the track at Tanah Merah MRT Station and was hit by a train heading towards Pasir Ris. To maintain services on the East-West line, eastbound trains were turned around at Eunos MRT Station and Tanah Merah MRT station, while the middle platform at Tanah Merah MRT Station heading towards Changi Airport MRT Station was used for eastbound train services.

Announcements were made in all stations and on affected trains to inform passengers of the delay and to advise them that the trains may be more crowded. Normal service resumed at around 3.40pm.

Sparks seen from underneath MRT train carriage

Some 800 passengers were asked to leave an MRT train they were in on July 25, 2010.

A loud sound was heard and sparks were seen coming from under the train carriage towards Joo Koon. The train was pulling into the Tanah Merah Station at around 9.20pm when the incident happened.

The noise and sparks ceased when the train came to a stop at the station. As a precaution, the passengers were asked to alight, and the Singapore Civil Defence Force called in to assist. Westbound services through Tanah Merah Station were not affected, as trains were routed through the middle track instead of the usual westbound track. No one was injured. SMRT is investigating the incident.
