[edit] Station

[edit] Description

Yio Chu Kang MRT Station (NS15) is an above-ground Mass Rapid Transit station on the North South Line in Singapore.

The station's architecture design theme is similar to Ang Mo Kio station, with brown granite walls and floors, except for the middle platform in Ang Mo Kio station, which this station does not have. This station serves students of neighbouring educational institutions, residents as well as workers at neighbouring industrial estates.

Yio Chu Kang used to be the northern terminus of the North South Line when it first opened in 7 November 1987. Trains terminated at Platform A before reversing and crossing over to the adjacent track.

[edit] Lentor MRT Station

In the early 1990s, Disney offered to build a theme park in the Lentor area, beside the Lower Seletar Reservoir. The station was to be between Khatib MRT Station and Yio Chu Kang MRT Station. SMRT was willing to build a station for the proposed theme park. Talks between the Singapore government and the corporation fell through and the idea was shelved.

[edit] Incidents

[edit] Track incursion

On 3 March 2003, a 23-year old drove his Mercedes onto an MRT track off Lentor Avenue, in the sector between Yio Chu Kang and Khatib MRT Stations, the first of its kind in the 15 years of MRT operations in Singapore. The freak accident occurred when the car, which was travelling at a speed of 87 kilometres an hour along Lentor Avenue (the maximum speed limit was 70 kilometres an hour there), mounted an 18 cm kerb, crossed 6 metres of grass verge (inclusive of a 1.5 metres wide pavement), jumped over a 1.5 metres drain, went through a fence 2 metres away from the track, and went uphill onto a steep stone embankment before landing on the MRT track.

Witnesses tried to remove the car from the tracks to prevent a possible collision, however an oncoming train from Yio Chu Kang stopped their efforts. One of the witnesses signaled the train driver to stop. Although the train driver was not able to stop in time, he was able to slow the train down enough to prevent derailment.

[edit] Train disruption

On May 13 2009, Northbound train services from Ang Mo Kio to Khatib MRT stations were disrupted for about 50 minutes when a train developed a fault and stalled around 7pm.

According to an SMRT spokesperson, the train had to be pushed to Yio Chu Kang station by another train travelling from Ang Mo Kio station. Some 1,800 passengers onboard both trains subsequently alighted at Yio Chu Kang station at about 7:30pm. All northbound services resumed at 7.50 pm.
